Twenty Pounds Later

Compliments of AP Press....as follows: CLEARFIELD, Pa. – It took Brad Sciullo 4 hours and 39 minutes to finish a marathon. A meat marathon, that is. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound western Pennsylvania chef is the first person to eat a monstrosity called the Beer Barrel Belly Bruiser: a 15-pound burger with toppings and a bun that brought the total weight to 20.2 pounds.
The mountain of beef is the product of Denny's Beer Barrel Pub, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh in Clearfield.
Sciullo, 21, of Uniontown, said he was surprised he finished the sandwich Monday. "About three hours into it, things got tough," he said.
When asked what possessed him to eat a burger that big, Sciullo said: "I wanted to see if I could."
The burger included a bun, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, mild banana peppers and a cup each of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and relish, pub owner Dennis Liegey said.
For completing the challenge in the under-five-hour time limit, Sciullo won $400, three T-shirts, a certificate "and a burger hangover, as I call it," Liegey said. Now thats what I call a burger.

Jazz Open Camp

Recently the Utah Jazz returned to the public view with its annual media day where the players smile for the cameras and swap "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" stories as they prepare for 2008-9 NBA Season. They headed to Boise until October 3rd at Boise State's Taco Bell Arena to open camp. Their first preseason game will be October 7th in Anaheim against the Lakers.

There are certainly countless reasons for optimism for Jazz fans. Heading into the season Utah is injury free. The Jazz have returning proven experience and depth at all positions. There are no contract hassles needing to be dealt with. Lastly the "franchise" players are in their prime.

With any season there are numerous questions which remain to be answered. Is Andrei honestly happy? Were the Olympic duties too much? Can a reliable center emerge (Fesenko, Koufos, etc)? Are there enough minutes and basketballs to go around (Brewer, Almond, Harpring, Miles, etc) to satisfy the logjam? Is this "The Window" year with Korver, Booz, and Okur possibly bailing next year? Definately stay tuned Jazz fans throughout the year to find out. It's gonna be a fun ride!

Who Is Sarah Palin?

Like most individuals when the VP was announced I was completely surprised at the pick and completely blindslided. In all honesty I was expecting the announcement to be Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, or Rob Portman. After some research of who she is and what she stands for the more I am impressed with the pick. Sarah was born in Sandpoint Idaho and married her high school sweetheart Todd Palin on 29 Aug 1988. Together they have five children and are regular church goers. She attended the University of Idaho and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism. Her eldest son even enlisted in the army after September 11th. Sarah is currently the governor of Alaska and trounced then Governor Frank Murkowski in being elected by a decisive margin despite an overwhelming anti-republican feeling in that election. Her approval ratings bounces around 90 percent. She is clearly pro life. Sarah supports drilling in ANWR and opposes same sex marriage. She is a lifetime member of the NRA and is an incredibly smart, independent, articulate conservative woman. How can one not like an individual that hunts, ice fishes, snowmobiles, has run a marathon and eats mooseburgers?

America's Pastime

Did you know that there are over 50 million individuals who tailgate each year? Tailgating has become one of the fastest growing pastimes. It has grown rapidly into a multi-billion dollar industry. Statistics have shown the average age range is 25-44 and that the average arrival time is 3-4 hours pregame. It has been called the last great American neighborhood. Often on the menu one can find appetizers, dips, chicken/wings, kabobs, beverages, burgers, brats and or beef. A few quick tips to remember will help to make each tailgating event a succesful outing to remember.

Preparation Ahead of time sit down and make an extensive list that will cover it all. That list should be one that could be used annually regardless of what time of the year. Different weather can effect the possible additional items to include. Have all the possible food items been previously purchased? Has everything been checked and packed? How bout the propane tank for the grill? Is it full and ready to go?

Timing Arrive early enough to provide plenty of ample prep time for setting up, cook/eating time and lastly conversation time. Consider the route there for any possible delays. Remember the matchup. Is it against Prairie View Technical College? Is the visiting team from a major conference? Or is the game against a rival?

Location Location Location There can be a number of things to remember and take into consideration. Is the area a great hotspot? Or have there been known annoying squares to frequent the area? How is the restroom accessibility? Are you parking in the same zip code as the event? Different venues (if an away game) offer different services and may also prohibit certain aspects (radio, tv, or simply throwing a football around). The venue may in fact provide at no extra charge extra tables (if notified in advance).

Extras It can never hurt to have a little extra food or that extra roll of paper towels. Certain miscellaneous items often can be incredibly useful or just simple extra conveniences. Extra paper plates, beverages, ice, condiments, sunscreen, garbage bags definately always come in handy!Just a few simple things to consider that could be helpful. Any thoughts? I'll see you in the parking lot enjoying America's last great neighborhood!

Messin With Sasquatch...Possibility

Recently in the news Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer claimed while hiking in Northern Georgia to have stumbled upon a bigfoot carcass of 7 feet 7 weighing approximately 500 pounds. They apparently had the DNA sent to a lab for testing. Jeffrey Meldrum a bigfoot researcher and Idaho State University Professor said of the provided photo released from the news conference "it just looks like a costume with some fake guts thrown on top for effect". As for the DNA evidence one was inconclusive, one was human and the third was from a possum. The creatures physical body is being held in a large freezer in an undisclosed location while waiting for further testing. So how about the possibility of Sasquatch in Utah? There are 160 known Utah bigfoot reports. Sightings in Utah have been reported to as close as 8 feet. Utah's hotspot is coldwater canyon (Weber County). Back on 13 September in 2003 in Ophir City/Canyon (Tooele county) area there were three separate reports called in to local law officials. In Summit County on 8 November 2005 there were four separate reports of strange howls that lasted approximately 20 seconds. Casts were later taken in the area with the feet 6 inches wide and 12 inches long. What do you think of this whole Bigfoot thing? Would love to hear!

Chump Change

Most Americans are frustrated and would absolutely love to know where or when does the cost of gas finally end. With so many intangibles there is no way of being able to predict such a thing. On the flipside there is likely a high percentage of Americans who probably have no clue whatsoever where the money is going once it is pumped into their vehicle. With a little of research here's what I was able to come up with. Off the top there are the government taxes (what else is new? LOL) typically for building and road maintenance (approximately 40 cents of which per gallon while the national average has the state governments taking approximately 22 cents per gallon). Obviously there is also the logistics of moving the product from refineries to the local pump which is approximately 25 cents per gallon. About another 25 cents per gallon goes to the actual refinery companies such as Sunoco, Frontier, etc. About $2 per gallon (the big portion) goes to the actual producers like Chevron or Marathon. However, once at the local convenience station (keep in mind most are typically independently owned/operated) which generates typically about 7 to 10 cents for every gallon (according to the US Energy Information Administration). At that rate there is absolutely also no way that could even be considered profit when you figure in the local employee wages, the lease, the station bills (electrical/upkeep etc). Any profit whatsoever at that level likely would have to come from coffee, cigarette, alcohol, soda or food/candy sales. From another website there was a percentage breakdown for a gallon of gas which was as follows...

58 crude oil
17 refining
15 taxes
9 distribution/retail
1 local store income

Just something to think about or ponder next time you fill up at the pump. Any thoughts? Would love to hear!

Hey yo!

Face it most of us at one time or another (most likely in our youth) have had or messed around with a yo-yo whether it was learning tricks as walking the dog or splitting the atom (or just simply goofing off). The yo-yo is thought to have originated in China where it was first mentioned from about 500 BC. James L Haven and Charles Hettrich received the first US patent back in 1866. However, in 1928 Pedro Flores opened a yo-yo company in Santa Barbara California. By November that year Flores was running his company with 600 workers and producing over 300,000 units daily. The world yo-yo contest was held recently in Florida with John Ando taking this years honors as champion. Back in 1996 it was actually won by a local named Dale Myrberg from Sugarhouse (even set 9 American yo-yo Associated World Records). He was also recently inducted into the American Yo Yo Association Hall Of Fame (yes it actually does exist). Over the years Dale has collected over 3,000 yo-yo's. It all began at the age of 13. He was a rather quick study and progressed to a elevated state of yo winning the state title at 15. To some it might be perceived as a waste of time. To others it teaches practice, patience and persistence!

Earthquake Ready?

Tuesday's earthquake of 5.4 magnitude in southern california sent yet another message to us how fragile life can be. Utah geologists have warned as early as the 1800s that a giant earthquake striking the Wasatch front was NOT a matter of if but when. There are approximately 700 earthquakes in Utah every single year. Most are minor and never felt. However, what if the predicted big one finally hit? We saw somewhat recently the impact of such in Wells NV. Geologists at the U of U have stated the probability of a larage scale earthquake during the next 50 years to about a one in five chance. Would we be ready? With the ground shifting violently once smooth roads now include a 10 foot dropoff. Power, water and gas lines would snap. Unsecured hot water heaters are abruptly ripped loose breaking natural gas lines. Home fires to follow. Collapsed buildings and walls may kill or injure people. Bridges and overpasses could collapse. Traffic stranded. Severe power outages likely to occur. Cell phone and communication lines would be knocked out. All of which to happen in only a matter of seconds. Would we know what to do? How would we react? Do we have easily accessible 72 hr kits (first aid supplies included)? Do we have some sort of food or water supply? Do we even have any alternate plans ready in place? Just something to seriously consider and to think about. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Lawn Mower Man

Came across this newstory that seemed simply absolutely unbelievable and was screaming had to be posted. Keith Walendowski 56 from Milwaukee has been charged with a felony possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle and a misdemeanor for disorderly conduct while armed. According to the filed complaint Walendowski was emotionally distraught and intoxicated because his lawn boy lawn mower wouldn't start so he shot his lawnmower. If convicted he could face up to an $11,000 fine including 6.5 years in prison. Sounds like he needs some serious anger mangement therapy classes. Instead of cutting grass looks like he will be cutting some time.

McCain VP Short List

Attempting to correctly predict the potential VP running mate is always rather difficult since there are so many possible underlying factors. Do they get along and could they work well together? Is the presidential nominee looking to carry a swing state? Or looking to solidify his base and strength in a specific demographic arena? Or something entirely different? Still, here are a few guesses at names that John McCain definately might consider.

Tom Coburn has wonderful credentials especially towards illegal immigration and is a staunch fiscal conservative. Unfortunately he isn't particually charismatic and since the state of Oklahoma isn't expected to be a battleground state Coburn may not add enough to this political equation.
Charlie Crist is an extremely popular governor from the state of Florida which has been a key swing state in the last two elections. Crist played QB back in college for Wake Forest. Charlie has a pro-family approach towards abortion and is a longtime advocate of capital punishment. He is also for higher emission standards.
Jim DeMint is relatively young and charismatic espcially with conservatives. Jim was ranked by the National Journal in 2007 March as the most conservative Senator. He married his high school sweetheart and together they have 4 children. DeMint would be a great choice to shore up McCain's right side.
Tim Pawlenty hails from the state of Minnesota which could be a swing state and should get a closer look as a potential candidate from John McCain. He is an avid hockey fan as he plays non-competitively with the Minnesota Wild (pro team) and did obtain his law degree from the University Of Minnesota Law School.
Rob Portman has spent over a decade in Congress from the state of Ohio. He is also already a longtime friend of John McCain and is good friends with current President George Bush as well. Portman is a published author, avid canoeist and kayaker. He has the mind of a budget director having a mild temperament with a ideal resume.
If there were to be any guesses on who the possible running mate is there is a great chance I believe John McCain may take a hard close look at Tim Pawlenty. I purposely left out Bobby Jindal from the list as he had already turned down any potential offers. Who do you think McCain will pick? Any guesses? Would love to hear!

Favre: Take 2?

Since week 4 of the 1992 NFL season there has not been a QB controversy in Green Bay. Brett Favre carried an unparalled streak of 275 consecutive games, won 3 MVPs, led the Packers to two Super Bowls (won one) and has become the most sanctified athlete in American sports. His ride of mystical fame status with perhaps the most beloved football franchise made it all the better. When Brett announced his retirement in March it was totally assumed he would ride off into the sunset to the Hall Of Fame. The ensuing fued began immediately between Packers GM Ted Thompson and Favre when Brett decided it wasn't time to hang up the cleats quite yet after 17 seasons. The saga doesn't look to end anytime soon either. Public NFL drama isn't anything new either. In fact the league thrives on it. Recent examples include Terrell Owens versus the Eagles and Pacman Jones versus the commish himself Roger Goodell. Sooner or later the cleats will be hung up. It happens to all eventually and often not on their own terms. Elway was one of the rare examples. Former Packer great Bart Starr retired in 1971 finishing with a 4-8 record. Archie Manning took the helmet off finally in 1984 with the Vikings ending their season at 3-13. Joe Namath unlaced the cleats in 1977 sporting 3 TDs and 5 TDs in his final hurrah. If either the passion is gone or when the mind is still willing but the body can no longer follow that's the time to let it go. Brett was absolutely phenomenal and should definately be able to look back without any regrets that it was left all out on the field.

You Can Run But You Can't Hide

Wednesday definately marked the successful premier of the fifth season and return of Dog The Bounty Hunter. The episode was filled was suspense and drama. Dog and clan encountered a felon with a history of violence, a desperate drug addict cryin out for help and a brave informant willing to risk everything. When the adrenalized action went down every single family member played a critical role. The series has been one of the highest rated reality shows on cable since airing in 2004. Last season averaged nearly 2 million viewers. It is interesting how William Clinton committed adultery (even lied under oath to a federal grand jury) and society still approves of what he does career-wise. In fact its even more interesting how Jesse Jackson has used demeaning racial slurs towards presidential candidate Barack Obama yet noone took him off the air. Talkin serious double standard there. As for Dog yes he might have said something wrong but it was a private family conversation never meant for the public. Yet, the public crucified him. Hasn't he and his family already suffered enough (going the through the whole incident back in Mexico)? Where else on tv will you find a reality show where they are about trying to change people's lives for the better and even pray on tv?

Hot Off The Grill

In the eternal quest to discover calories, artery clogging and the best burger bun assemblage I began creating my list of best burgers. The word hamburger comes from the Hamburg Steak which was first recorded in Enlish in 1884. Louis Lassen is credited by the US Library Of Congress as the maker of America's first hamburger. While the cheeseburger first appeared in 1924 by Lionel Sternberger at the age of 16 by experimentally dropping a slab of American Cheese on a sizzling burger while helping at his father's sandwich shop "The Rite Spot" in Pasadena CA.

Thus, claiming the spot as top burger is Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Was a little more pricey but unquestionably well worth it as well as worth the wait in line. Absolutely amazing. The fries had a cajun salt added that was simply delicious.
As my second most favorite was In N Out Burger. Similar superior mouth watering taste animal style (w/ grilled onions) but more reasonably priced. The fries without question are freshly made on the spot.
Coming in third was a small place found in Reno NV called Tasty's. Setup there was similar to the straight forward simplistic menu as In N Out Burger. Definately well worth the cost while providing more than ample size burger. Tasty's also had very minimal wait in line.
At the fourth spot lies a local place here in Tooele called Dairy Delight. Serves awesome ice cream as well. With Dairy Delight one better bring a hearty appetite. Service is a little slow but worth the wait. The burgers served are so large the buns have to be specially made. Yours truly has accomplished the feat of eating a double with fries and a drink. Have never even considered eating a triple but would definately pay to see someone be able to accomplish the task.
Rounding out my personal top five would be Fatburger a chain I came across while visiting Vegas. Definately a delicious burger and reasonably priced offering all the different possible toppings and condiments imagined.
This is not a complete list as it is still an ongoing process while I taste test in search of the perfect cheeseburger in paradise. Others still yet to be "grilled" thru the taste buds include the Burger Bar (up in Layton), Shooting Star Saloon (Huntsville), Fuddruckers (sandy) and Eat A Burger in Hollday. Know of any others that should be included? Would love to hear!

To Air Is Human

On August 8th a new Air Guitar champion will be declared. The first ever held event was in Oulu Finland back in 1996. Participants from all over the world displayed their skills in hopes of capturing the hearts of the air judges. Prizes included a custom made "Flying Finn" guitar and amp graciously donated by Queen guitarist Brian May. Current reigning champ is Ochi "Dainoji" from Japan. Hmm there's still a couple months and time to "train".

Rock Paper Scissors

In anticipation for the Olympics I came across on the internet of a new Olympic sport. Rock Paper Scissors. Yes, for real. Apparently back on June 22 Sean Sears from Chicopee MA threw rock in order to defeat Julie Crossley (Anderson IN) in Vegas to capture the National Championship and the right to head to Beijing to represent the United Stated during the summer olympics. Sean won $50K for the event and had majored in computer engineering in college but now will train rigorously for 2 months before heading to China. What I'd like to know is how does one seriously train for such an event? I do suppose that it is a serious workout regardless.

Hot Dog 2008 Champ

Just finished watching this year hot dog eating championship on the day we celebrate our independence in the right to pursue our freedoms and personal happiness. The contestants sought their right to pursue gluttony, acid reflex and intestinal discomfort. In this years grueling rematch defending champ Joey Chestnut tried to fend off Takeru Kobayashi who had won the event every year from 2001 to 2006. Apparently, this years regulation time was changed to coincide with the original format from when the event first began. Last year's event was 12 minutes to down as many hot dogs. This year contestants only have 10 minutes. After regulation Chesnut and Kobayashi were tied at 59. Judges decided in a photo finish to have a 5 dog eat off. When the frankfurters were gone (as well as everyone else's appetite) Joey Chestnut retained the coveted "mustard belt". Wonder how they "train" for the event? Binge and purge? Regardless, that is some serious major league eating.

What's Channel Do U Watch?

Often we focus on the discouragements in life. We might be dealing with a trial, a family sickness, something at work, problems with a vehicle, etc. However, when was the last time we stopped and think about what we are watching? Too often we are watching the "I Can't Do That" channel. Sometimes we tune in the "I'm Not Good Enough" channel. Some days it might be the "It's Not Gonna Happen" network. Sometimes it's the "Worry" channel. We need to get into a habit of looking at the positive and not be so critical of ourselves. There are good channels in our internal programming. When was the last time we switched the remote control to "The Victory" channel. We create our own happiness. Happiness is like cologne or perfume. It spreads to all those around us. That "Victory" channel lifts. It makes us smile. In our internal programming we can always access at any given time "On Demand" our victories whether it be a trial or an accomplishment. It has been said seeing is believing. When we create that positive personal vision good things tend to follow. Tune into the voice of victory. Replay the personal victories and accomplishments. Break out the encouragement file. Celebrate the things that are right. Dreams, desires and obstacles will also come easier. Stop for a few minutes and give yourself a high five!

Red White And Blue

The stage has been set. The team has been named. Now the work begins. USA basketball hopes to capture gold after a underachieving 2004 USA olympic hoop team accepted third in Athens. That is not enough. Managing Director Jerry Colangelo selected the team. They will be guided and coached by Mike Krzyewski. The team is as follows:

15 Carmelo Anthony 6.8F
4 Carlos Boozer 6.9F
12 Chris Bosh 6.10F
10 Kobe Bryant 6.6G
11 Dwight Howard 6.11C
6 Lebron James 6.8F
5 Jason Kidd 6.4G
13 Chris Paul 6.0G
14 Tayshaun Prince 6.9F
8 Michael Redd 6.6G
7 Dwayne Wade 6.3G

Carmelo will need to definately play better defense and will likely take a backside in scoring with Kobe n Lebron on the court. Boozer should add some power and rebounding. Bosh is a great defender and rebounder. Dwight Howard was simply a beast to be reckoned with this last year in the NBA. Hands down was an amazing year for Howard. Lebron and Kobe do a little of everything and do it well. Kobe, Lebron, Deron, and Paul all know how to create n score on their own if needed. Tayshaun is simply the best defender and will represent well. Redd provides some serious outside sharpshooting. Deron is simply becoming a superstar force to be reckoned with in the NBA. Paul knows how to run an offense. Kidd at 35 will be the veteran leader and also provide experience. Jason boasts of a perfect 44-0 record at the senior level competitions. Miami Heat Trainer Tim Grover has been working with Wade and has been given medical clearance and should definately be ready for Beijing. Training begins 28 June at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus. This team should represent well in all facets of the game.

Citius, Altius, Fortius

With the Olympics less than 45 days how much do we really know about Beijing? In the city there are over 17 million citizens. Encircling Beijing are 9 expressways, 11 national highways, several railway routes and an international airport. Beijing only runs 5 subway lines for roughly 17 million citizens. By comparison NYC alone has 26 lines for only 8 million. On an average day in Beijing the air pollution is nearly 5 times above World Health Organization standards. Coal is China's main source of energy and bears much of the blame. It has numerous professional sports teams present. They are: Beijing Guoan (Soccer), Beijing Ducks (Basketball), Beijing Tigers (Baseball) and the China Sharks (Asia League Ice Hockey). The Olympics run 8 Aug thru the 24th. I will definately watch when I can track/field, basketball and soccer. What will you be watching?

Defensive Presence

Less than a week away the Utah Jazz (54-28 in 2007-8) will make their first selection at pick 23 which may very well likely be a defensive stopper. There is a solid foundation to build around in Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer. Kyrylo Fesenko is already on the roster. However is he the future? He wears a size 18 shoe and has a 7'4 wingspan but with very limited minutes its rather difficult to say how good he might be. Some of the possible interior defense candidates might include:

7.2/245 Roy Hibbert/Georgetown Hibbert's massive size in unparalled by any player in this years draft. Roy has an excellent work ethic, has great hands with a soft touch around the rim, is a great passer, and stays out of foul trouble. Hibbery possesses a great basketball IQ. He averaged 13.4ppg and 6.4rebs. Sometimes he struggles running the floor and did not improve much between his JR and SR seasons. Falling to the Jazz would be an ideal situation for both parties.
7.0/245 Robin Lopez/Stanford Robin is an above average rebounder and shot blocker. He definately fits a roll of a defensive presence. Lopez has big hands that will catch just bout everything thrown his direction. However, he is rather raw on the offensive side of the ball and has very little in terms of low post moves in only two years at Stanford. Robin did average 10.2ppg and 5.7rebs. Robin could be a project in the making. Not sure if this was a good year to come out.
7.0/265 Kosta Koufos/Ohio St In only his freshman year Koufos displayed excellent mobility for a center. He has a great touch around the rim, can post up, owns a good mid to long range jumper and can put the ball on the floor. Reminds me of Okur. Kosta is also a strong post defender where he uses his size well. Unfortunately his post game can be rather predictable since he has practically no left hand. As a freshman he did post up some decent numbers (14.4ppg and 6.7rebs) but would be served to stay in school another year.
7.0/237 Javale McGee/Nevada For his size Javale is an incredible mobile player. He's capable of finishing with good pick and rolls. That would fit in nicely for the Jazz who have abused this play over the years. Players know what is coming but have not been able to stop it. His shot blocking potential is off the charts. His shot selection can be questionable and thus sometimes isn't that efficient. As a sophomore he averaged 14.1ppg and 7.3rebs. Javale could have an amazing upside with proper coaching.
6.10/245 Marreese Speights/Florida In high school Marreese had his jersey retired after one year. His shooting mechanics are fundamentally sound. He has an absolute flawless stroke. In the post Marreese owns a beautiful hook shot and even sweeter tournaround J. His wingspan is well above average which would allow him to play both a 4 and a 5 slot at the nect level. Speights runs the court well on both ends and is effective at the pick and roll. He can be more of finesse player but needs to develop more of a nasty agressiveness. After only two years he posted some nice digits (14.5ppg and 8.1rebs).
6.9/251 DJ White/Indiana White has decent size with long arms. He is physical and plays efficiently. DJ has a turnaround J within 5-8ft that is impressive using off either shoulder. His shot has great range and is smart rebounder. Unfortunately White's size isn't ideal. DJ projects likely as a role player at the next level. At Indiana he did average 17.4ppg with 10.3rebs.
6.11/250 Jason Thompson/Rider Thompson has long arms, great hands and is quite mobile. Jason runs the floor well and is a sweet rebounder (12.4rebs/game). Very skilled away from the hoop as well. He came into the collegiate game raw and has developed quite nicely (20.4ppg). Sometimes he falls in love with his perimeter game a bit too much.

Father's Day Appreciation

On 5 July 1908 in Fairmont West Virginia the first modern Father's Day Celebration was held. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South. Grace Golden Clayton is believed to have suggested the service to the Pastor. Americans this year are expected to spend over $11 billion on gifts for Father's Day. I would hope that we take a few minutes out of our busy schedules this day and remember our father's, forefathers or even that Heavenly Father above who has given us everything, even life itself. We all have a father who let us borrow the car, or gave us $5 bucks we needed, or even took us fishing. Spend a little time of appreciation and let them know how much they are needed.

Football Preseason Quick Hits

Last year we saw a crackdown on Pacman Jones, a retirement in Brett Favre and the NY Giants as Super Bowl champions. I thought I'd take a quick look at the upcoming year and teams. Here are a few of my thoughts...

ATL The star QB is serving 23 months on federal charges related to dogfighting. The win loss record plummeted and so has season ticket sales. Can it get any worse for Atlanta? Matt Ryan isn’t exactly the second coming of the imprisoned Michael Vick. Ryan did carry a mediocre offense to a great season. Will Turner be able to handle a full time load as a starter? Offensively challenged Falcons might rely on a few Elam field goals.
AZ Former Heisman trophy winner Leinart heads into camp first on the depth chart but could be on a short leash and must remain healthy to hold off Warner. Both Boldin and Fitzgerald are consistent Cardinals. However, something needs to happen soon for Anquan and his contract situation. Edgerrin is a workhorse but how much longer can he hold up. Pope could definately be a “sleeper”.
BAL After a disappointing 5-11 record McNair decided to call it quits. Left tackle Jonathan Ogden followed and hung up the cleats on a phenomenal career. The Raven defense will now have to carry this team until Flacco gets up to speed. Having Todd Heap finally healthy should be a bonus. With Harbaugh around there is a new energy.
BUF Buffalo had the 30th ranked offense and 31st defense. Say enough? Marshawn was good as advertised despite the record and unit rankings. Rookie James Hardy could give the Bills a needed boost in the red zone.
CAR Has Delhomme fully recovered from Tommy John surgery? The Panthers hopes rest on his elbow. In last 6 seasons the Panthers are only 24-24 at home. Having a QB carousel hurt Steve Smith in 2007.
CHI Two years removed from a Super Bowl the Bears could be on shaky ground. They are still struggling at QB (Grossman/Orton), may have lost their running attack with Cedric gone (good luck in Canada), and saw Berrian bolting off to Minnesota. That is not exactly a recipe for success. Definately will be interesting to see how well Forte responds. Tommie Harris played hurt most of the season and still made the Pro Bowl.
CIN How much of a distraction will Cinco’s holdout be? Having the Chad tirade and show (holdout) TJ Housh could have a superb year. Wide receiver Chris Henry was released from the team after another off the field incident. He was also suspended indefinately by the league. Only, Marino, Warner, Unitas and Peyton got to 100 TDs faster than Carson Palmer. The Bengals drafted Keith Rivers and it's not likely he will sit on the bench long.
CLE Brady Quinn still has his fans but find himself on the bench again. Jamal Lewis should find another 1,000 yard season. The Browns added Stallworth to open things up for Braylon. Winslow’s knee always has been a concern. If this is a playoff year McGinest's experience and leadership will be a major bonus.
DAL Went 13-3 and sent 13 players to the Pro Bowl but have now lost each of their last 4 postseason appearances. Marion Barber hasn’t been a full time back since high school. All eyes will be on Pacman Jones. Kicker Folk will do well in fantasy leagues. You know the Cowboys will put points on the board. If there's a concernt it could be the age factor. Both “T.O.” and Glenn are 34 while Zach Thomas is playin in his 13th year. Felix provides speed to complement Barber’s brutality.
DEN With the firing of GM Ted Sundquist there’s noone to blame if things go sour except Shanahan. Cutler and Marshall are the building blocks for the franchise. Selvin Young has emerged as the front runner at RB. Darrell Jackson was brought in for experience. Stokely is still one of the best slot receivers around. The OL was addressed in offseason. Clady should step in immediately at left tackle. Health (as opposed to last season) should play a major factor in the Broncos season. Losing Elam will definitely hurt. Royal could ride mile high in the return game.
DET Can the Lions stop anyone on defense? That could be highly debatable. They couldn’t get off the field. Since Matt Millen became team president in 2001 the Lions have gone 31-81 and have only won one playoff game since winning it all in 1957. Could there be a change in the works? Rookie RB Kevin Smith could turn some heads.
GB How do you replace a legend such as Brett Favre? After 16 years the Packers will have a new look and a new feel. The new face is Aaron Rodgers. Can he remain healthy (2006 broken foot, 2007 hamstring) remains to be seen. Grant may have to carry more of a load with Favre gone and with Brett gone Crosby could also see more FGs.
HOU Could this be the year the Texans finally posts a winning record? Despite finishing 8-8 and losing some of their top players (Schaub, Ahman, Andre Johnson, Dunta, etc) for much of the season Houston is optimistic. When Andre is healthy he’s one of the top receivers in the league. After finishing 3rd in the league in sacks Mario Wiliams looks to top that.
IND If Peyton is present you can mark them down for 10 wins minimum. Is Marvin’s career coming to a close as a Colt? Injuries limited him last year and with a police investigation of a shooting looming it could be interesting to see how things plays out. Wayne has clearly become the main man as one of the league's top receiving threats. Anthony Gonzalez could have a breakout season. Joseph Addai is reliable in the clutch but could be pushed by youngster Mike Hart.
JAX Garrard played phenomenally last year and emerged as the teams franchise QB. Fred Taylor (at 32) finally played in his first Pro Bowl last year. However, Jones-Drew is becoming the face of the future (little guy who puts up big numbers). Jerry Porter was brought in to become the #1 go to receiver. At 6 TDs in OAK he should clearly be able to top that as a Jaguar.
KC Rookie Dwayne Bowe was the lone bright spot at WR. Gonzalez once again was the Chief’s top receiver. Larry Johnson struggled behind a bad OL before his foot fracture. Glenn Dorsey will be a major addition to the DL.
MIA Parcells adds instant credibility to a 1-15 franchise. Beck has the QB slot to lose. Revamped OL should help immediately. Jake Long will be expected to anchor the OL and protect the inexperience. Ginn averaged 12.4 yards per catch and can stretch the field.
MIN The Vikings will go as far as Tavaris. Jackson remains a work in progress. He can definitely beat you with his legs but can he beat you with his arm? With the addition of Berrian there can’t be any more excuses for Tavaris. Adrian Peterson could be scary good if he can stay healthy. Durability could be his only question mark. On defense Minnesota is next to impossible to run against.
NE Brady has never missed a start since 2001. What do Brady and Moss do for an encore? With an even easier schedule the Pats wont lose many games. Needing to get younger on the LB front New England drafted Jerod Mayo who be expected to step in and help right away.
NO Where will the running game go? Deuce is coming off double knee surgery (2nd ACL in less than 2 years). Bush was sidelined the final 4 games with a partially torn PCL. Sedrick Ellis (DT) drafted from USC should fill a need immediately. Brees was spectacular before injuries depleted his arsenal. Was Colston really a 7th round pick?
NYG The coach got an extension. The team visited the White House. The QB got married. Its never easy to repeat in the NFL with as many intangibles are present each season. Will there be a Super Bowl hangover? Shockey isn't happy and wants a trade while Plaxico wants a new contract. Is the Super Bowl honeymoon already over? Or will they look to enjoy that basking again? Kenny Phillips from Miami is a wonderful addition and will start from day one. After 13 seasons Toomer still comes up clutch.
NYJ A record of 4-12 can be pretty glaring. Thomas Jones, Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues were all putting up big numbers for the Jets just not in the end zone. Gholston should help the linebacking corp.
OAK With an upgraded supporting cast the Raiders could make some noise in 2008. JaMarcus didn’t get his first start in 2007 until week 16. Fargas could be pushed my McFadden who is expected to supercharge the Raider nation running game. Javon gets a fresh new start, again.
PHI With McNabb fully recovered from his ’06 ACL injury look for more mobility/scrambles, receptions and more points on the board. DeSean Jackson will be a strength on kick returns. Westbrook is amazingly productive as a reliable runner or receiver for the Eagles.
PIT Steeler fans might notice that will play one of the toughest schedules in 2008. Drafting Rashard gives more versatility and lightens Parker’s load without a dropoff. Losing Alan Faneca in his prime to the Jets will hurt. Injuries to Polamalu made it his worst season but still made the pro bowl.
SD How much longer will the window be open for Tomlinson? The Chargers have clearly separated themselves from the field in the AFC West and should have no problem again in 2008. In the offseason Rivers had his torn ACL repaired. Chambers quickly became Rivers’ favorite target. Gates is reliable within the red zone. Merriman has a motor that knows one speed. Weddle is a real ball hawk who takes over for Marlon McCree.
SEA The Seahawks are moving to a new a new multimillion practice facility and even used it to recruit Julius Jones (replacing Alexander). Look for Burleson to shine while Deion Branch will miss half or even all of this year with a knee injury. The linebacking corps is among the best.
SF Bay area fans are growing impatient with Alex Smith the former 2005 number one pick. Alex Smith isn’t exactly Brett Favre but keep in mind Mike Martz will become Smith’s fourth offensive coordinator in 4 seasons. As Alex’s safety net look for Vernon Davis’ numbers to blow up with Martz’ arrival. Gore has the chance to become the first player to rush for more than 1000 yards in 3 consecutive seasons.
STL After a health plagued year the Rams look to bounce back from a 3-13 record. Chris Long will come to play every down and will be a breath of fresh air. If Rams can protect Bulger he’ll produce.
TB Oft injured Cadillac Williams has Warrick Dunn aboard. Returns to his former team who drafted him. But that was 1997. Galloway is in his 14th year (not sure what that is in football years) and still has some wheels. Jeff Garcia was a major difference last year for the Bucs.
TN Having a new offensive coordinator (Mike Heimerdinger) should help bring more confidence for Vince Young. The Titans added a major upgrade at TE in Alge Crumpler. Losing Pacman as a total distraction could actually be addition by subtraction. LenDale ran over 1000 yards topping 100 yards in five games. McCareins returns to the fold in the receiving corps. As a kicker Bironas is clutch. Can he top last seasons production?
WAS New coach Jim Zorn brings playing experience to the Redskin camp. Washington saw postseason first time since 1999. Cooley gets in the end zone year after year. Redskins should give Devin Thomas a chance to get on the field.

We Will Never Forget

Decoration Day (originally known as) commemorates US men & women who have died in service to our country. The alternative name of Memorial Day was chosen in 1882 but did not become more common until after WWII and was not declared official until 1967. Some of its traditions include visiting cemetaries, observing a national moment of remembrance at 3PM EST, and flying the US flag at half staff from down until noon local time. Unfortunately, it is better known for picnics, BBQs, golf, movie theatres, and family gatherings. Although these are wonderful things let us NOT ever forget what makes those events and freedom truly possible. Whether you agree or diagree on the topic of war regardless of where it may be individuals would not often have any freedom whatsoever if it were not possible for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Pearl S Buck stated it nicely "None who have always been free can fully understand the terrible fascinating power of the hope of freedom to those who are not free". Every man dies but not everyone really lives. Let's on this day upon us take a few minutes and remember those who made it possible for the rest of us.

Rock The Vote?

Most Americans are familiar with the common catch phrase "Rock The Vote". Yet as Americans are we really Rocking The Vote? Are we making the most sound decision we believe in when we cast our vote? Voting is that very act in which an individual expresses their support or preference for a certain motion, act or choosing a candidate. It is absolutely essential in making a democracy work most efficiently. In recent years only 70 to 75 percent choose to register to vote. Even worse in the 2004 presidential election voter turnout was only a mere 56 percent. Why is it that we can make the effort to head to a convenience store for a soda refill but can't seem to make it when placing someone to make decisions representing us? Somewhat recently in individuals in Iraq had their first free election in years. Many traveled miles risking their own lives to make their voice known. Without voting citizens lose much of their ability to best represent their voice on the different political opinions and issues. How can we as Americans expect the best when we haven't even researched or delved into the different arenas that each candidate supports? Often a candidate will say one thing but do something entirely different once they are elected. So when was the last time we actually searched those candidates voting history and saw where they truly stood on certain issues (immigration, gun rights, abortion, etc)? Many voters usually see one or two things they like and call it good. Uneducated individuals can be highly susceptible to jumping on an influencial bandwagon based on biased media, headlines, tabloids, attack pamphlets/smear ads, etc. Often an uneducated vote can be more harmful than no vote at all. Before we stand and be counted lets take some time to reflect, ponder, and study out the different issues and candidates. Only by doing so can we reach the best possible conclusion in showing America (and the community we live in) who really rocks!

Most saturday mornings children can be seen planted smack in front of the tv screen watching their favorite cartoon characters while the parents try to sleep in. I remember growing up doing much the same. Over the years my favorite cartoons have changed very little. Those cartoons/characters inviduals might have seen include: Bugs Bunny, Ren & Stimpy; Grape Ape, Pinky & The Brain, Wiley E Coyote, Fred Flintstone, Fat Albert, Scooby Doo, etc. Amongst all the cartoons included are ten of my personal all time favorites...

Sweet Tooth

Candy is a rather broad term of a product typically made by dissolving sugar in water or milk to form a syrup boiled till it reaches its desired concentration or starts to carmelize. The type varies with the specific ingredients and how long it is boiled. Such examples of the different types of candy include caramel, toffee, fudge, gumdrops, taffy as well as countless others. In any convenient store you might find the following: lollipops, lifesavers, candy corn, truffles, swedish fish, gummi worms, tootsie rolls, gumdrops, licorice, salt water taffy, raisinette's, peanut butter cups, hot tamales, junior mints, chiclets, starbursts, skittles, red hots, etc. My personal five favorites include

Ferrero Rochers
Peanut M & Ms
Jelly Belly's
Andes Mint Chocolates
Hershey Whoppers

Would love to hear some of your favorites.

Da Donkeys Postdraft Analysis

Like previous years Denver concentrated on focusing on their needs. Last year focus was found in the trenches (Jarvis Moss DE-Florida, Tim Crowder DE-Texas, Ryan Harris OT-Notre Dame, Marcus Thomas DT-Florida). One such focus was the offensive line. Matt Lepsis retired and is a tremendous loss. However, Ryan Clady (12th pick) should fill in nicely and start immediately. Clady has light feet, can neutralize quicker edge rushers on a regular basis and has agility to react to a quick change of direction. He anchors well and plays with great patience. Kory Lichtensteiger (C-Bowling Green) should provide better depth on the OL. He is alert to defensive schemes, can play both RG and LG and moves well in the box. Kory did suffer a torn labrum left shoulder injury in 2006 but played through it. With the 42nd pick Denver took Eddie Royal (WR-Va Tech) who will be utilized as a KR/PR. Royal struggles with physical corners but does have some blazin bronco speed. He does possess great ability to chance direction and acceleration but will drop a few passes. I'm not exactly sold on that pick. I believe there were bigger holes that could have been filled at that time. One such example is Trae Williams (CB from So Florida, picked up by Jacksonville) or Orlando Scandrick (CB Boise State, chosen by Dallas) who were both still available. Scandrick even ran a 4.32 timed forty. Champ is in his 10th year. Lynch will likely retire when 2007 is done (16th year). Foxworth has a good chance he's leaving via free agency also at the end of this coming year. Dre Bly is in his 10 year. Those will be some big holes need to be addressed quickly. Coach Shanahan has also stated that both Selvin Young and Mike Bell aren't everyday backs. Well, both Ray Rice (RB Rutgers, selected by Baltimore) and Steve Slaton (RB West Virginia, grabbed by Houston) were also available. However, I do like adding Ryan Torian (RB Arizona St) to the stable as well as Peyton Hillis (RB Arkansas). Ryan has a 34 inch vertical and has good field vision. He was a JC transfer from Butler Community College and won a national title there before joining up at Arizona State. Torian sat out the final 7 games with a Lis-Franc fracture. If he can regain his former form Ryan could be a steal for a 5th round pickup. If you followed Arkansas football even remotely you'd be familiar with Darren McFadden or Felix Jones. Peyton Hillis often paved the path for McFadden or Felix to run through. The secondary was addressed with Jack Williams (CB Kent State) and Josh Barrett(SS Arizona St). Jack possesses rare speed (4.32 forty) to start and stop. He has good balance and is a self starter. Williams can be a relentless blitzer and definately a vocal leader with a great team attitude to make up for the lack of size (5-9 some say is generous). At 6-2 225 Josh Barrett is built along the lines of a OLB. He ran a 4.35 forty and has a 31" vertical. He graduated with a Bachelors in Marketing (hopes to be a dentist someday). At Arizona State linebacker Spencer Larson was unquestionably the team leader. He is a high motor type and has great vision for developing plays. Unfortunately, he lacks a explosive quickness but does close well. On the defensive side Carlton Powell (DT Virginia Tech) has great line speed. He was the fastest (5.12) of all defensive tackles timed. Carlton has great instincts and feel for double teams. At 6-2 300 he was a dominant run stopper for Virginia Tech with solid character. Overall, I think this was a good draft but could have been better. There were some good choices made. Some bad choices made. However, noone will really be able to truly evaluate this draft for a number of years to see who came strong or who didn't come at all.

Airline woes

With recent flight cancellations, record fuel prices, delayed flights, overbooking, airline bankruptcies (Skybus, Frontier, Aloha, etc), layoffs, etc civilians may begin taking alternate travel steps. One bad sign can be seen when some airline shares are cheaper than an airport burger (ExpressJet $2.21, MesaAir $0.96). Maintenance spending has been cut back for years as well as company cost cutting (wages, pensions dissolved, benefits, etc). Northwest was the first to not feed passengers. United was the first to charge for extra checked ticketed baggage. Across the board we are now starting to see more mergers, discontinuing flights, pulling out of hubs, etc. Where does it end? Will this be the beginning of something else? Are we going to see a major airline close its doors in the near future? Or will we be seeing a airline that begin using alternative fuel in the near future? Definately interesting what might be in store for this industry. Any thoughts? Would love to hear.

Getting The Most For Your Dollar

Things can be tough financially in the day and age we live in. Taxes seem to get higher every year. Inflation keeps goin up along with the price of gas. We are all trying to make our ends meet. I figure I'll do my small part of what I can to help in ideas how we can get the most of our hard earned dollar(s). Here's a few ideas of items or things we can do for only a dollar! They are as follows...

1-Park downtown for a half hour
2-Purchase the latest edition of the Tooele transcript
3-Drive out to Wendover and put it all on red (granted the trip will cost you more than a dollar in gas)
4-Trade it on ebay for a different dollar
5-Make a lightweight two inch telescope (1x powered)
6-Get 100 pennies, find a fountain and make a 100 wishes
7-Pay off all your debts in Mexico
8-Level a wobbly table
9-Buy something off Mcdonalds Value menu for 99 cents (save a penny!)
10-Buy pretty much anything at the dollar store

Six Strings

Earlier in the day there was a discussion of who the best guitarist is. I believe that depends on many factors which includs (criteria, technical, genera, etc). Everyone has their own personal favorites so I decided to include mine as well. Yours might not agree completely with mine but hey this is my blog. In the process I tried to factor in different musical genera's across the board and that they must be living. They are as follows and NOT in any particular order:

Gary Hoey/Rock
Eric Johnson/Rock
Armik/New Age
Eddie Van Halen/Rock
Ottmar Liebert/Flamenco
Neil Zaza/Rock
Christopher Parkening/Classical
Joe Satriani/Rock
Govi/New Age
Eric Clapton/Blues

....would love to hear your thoughts or who would be on your list of top 10 living guitarists.

Da Donkeys Predraft Analysis

On April 26th the Denver Broncos will make their first selection of the 2008 NFL draft. Last season was rather disappointing to me as a lifelong fan. Their record of 7-9 spoke volumes. Their run defense was an open door policy. Whatever ran in and ran right through Denver's "D". I guess you could say we had the Swiss Cheese Defense (lots of major holes). Denver ranked 30th versus the run. The offense didn't seem to fare much better. At 21st in the league for putting points on the board the broncos could seriously use some sort of a boost (Red Bull, Rockstar, or ANYTHING at this point). From last years squad Denver lost a fair amount (Rod Smith, Jason Elam, Javon Walker and Matt Lepsis among notables). Somewhat recently they picked up Marlon McCree, Boss Bailey, and Keary Colbert. McCree should be a breath of fresh air especially with Lynch in likely his last year. On the other hand I'm not exactly sure what they see in picking up Colbert for losing Javon (who I thought was also a major nonfactor last year altogether) to the raiders. Colbert hasn't caught a touchdown since the 2005-6 season. After Brandon Stokely I don't see a whole lot of receiving depth. It would be nice to see some added depth. I assume depth will be added shortly at left tackle most likely through the draft. Two OL potentials include Chris Williams from Vanderbilt (6.6 317) or Ryan Clady from Boise State (6.6 316). Would absolutely LOVE to see Clady wearing Bronco colors! Either would likely see playing time immediately helping to offset the retirement of Matt Lepsis (who was rock solid!). This year Denver drafts at 12 and at 42 (2nd rd 11th pick). Some names I'd love to see Denver take a hard look at pending at what position they are looking at include

OL Ryan Clady/Boise St (6.6 316)
OL Chris Williams/Vanderbilt (6.6 317)
WR Early Doucet/LSU
WR Limas Sweed/TX
WR Andre Caldwell/FL (runs 4.37)
WR DeSean Jackson/Cal (runs 4.35)
RB Mike Hart/Mich
RB Ray Rice/Rutgers
ILB Dan Connor/PSU(6.3 233) Blue Collar! Best tackler ever at linebacker "U"
DT Frank Okam/TX (6.5 347) Solid pass rusher desperately needed
DT Sedrick Ellis/USC (6.2 305) Not likely to slip past Cincy at #9
CB Antoine Cason/AZ
CB Mike Jenkins/So Florida
CB Trae Williams/So Florida
FS Kenny Phillips/Miami

...regardless of what transpires via through free agency, trades and or the draft it will definately be interesting to see what happens. Looking to definately rebound from the 2007 season!

Origination Of Tooele

Since some of you might be wondering about our great city and its origination I took a few and googled some information. Back in 2004 Tooele had a population estimated at 27,903. Tooele according to the Census Bureau has 21.2 miles of total area. Its name is thought by some to have evolved from an old Ute indian word for tumbleweed (we definately have enough tumbleweeds!). Some explain its origination from a Native American chief but controversery exists about whether such a chief actually lived. Others hypothesize the name derives from "Tu-Wanda" the Goshute word for Bear or from "tule" a spanish word of Aztec origin meaning bulrush. About 100 Goshute Indians lived in the Tooele valley when Capt. Howard Stansbury surveyed the region for the US Army in 1853. On 4 Sept 1849 three Mormon pioneer families settled on a small stream south of present Tooele city. A few months later four men obtained timber rights from Small Canyon (today's Middle Canyon) and Big Canyon (Settlement Canyon). Tooele City Corporation was formed in 1853 and grew to a population of about 1200 at the turn of the century.

Sense Of Direction

Over 200 years ago when this great country was founded our forefathers carefully thought out a constitution. The US Constition is fundamentally changeless. In over two hundred years there have only been 26 amendments, ten of which were in the original Bill Of Rights. It is that standard in which the country is evaluated. It has been the basis for making major national decisions. Similarly each individual should have their own constitution, personal sense of direction, or mission statement. Each individual's should be timeless. It should be based upon principles that never change. It should be something that can always rely on when making a tough decision. Something that they can always come back to. That mission statement will be able to direct them in the correct path. George Washington used as his motto "Exitus Acta Probat" (The End Proves Actions). Since my favorite number is five I divided the different possible arenas of life into 5 areas (Eternal, Estate, Emploment, Environment and Ego). If I were to have a personal motto I'd choose Nil Sine Numine (Nothing Without God's Will). Without a sense of direction or mission statement an individual will never be able to discover a true complete personal identity and live fully invested in leaving a legacy. Would absolutely love to hear your thoughts, ideas or mission statements!

Pins & Needles

Every athlete regardless of sport is constantly trying to become better faster and stronger at whatever field it is. Whether its that basketball player shooting 100 free throws everyday. Whether its an star baseball player getting extra batting practice. Whether its football's wide receiver working on off season conditioning. It extends to all sports. Unfortunately in our time that advantage has taken on a whole new perspective desecrating sports pastimes. We have seen recently in the news runner Marion Jones. We have seen baseball's great pitcher Roger Clemons appear front and center before Congress. In the news we witnessed the death of wrestler Chris Benoit. Back in 92 we even saw the death of Lyle Alzado. All of which related by performance enhancing drugs. What an absolute sad state of our sports today. I saw this morning an article that the PBR will begin testing on bulls. Another article that both the PGA and LPGA will begin testing its athletes in July. Whatever happened to the good ole days? Things were done the right way. Whether it was Hammerin Hank Aaron. Whether it was Jesse Owens. Whether it was golfing legend Bobby Jones. Whether it was Bart Starr or Jim Thorpe. Whatever happened to playing the sport for the love of the game? Or has it become the love of money? I shiver at the thought what would any of those of the past do today if confronted with the same situation. I'd surely hope they'd pass right by it and keep it clean!

Stuff That Matters

There is no carbon copy of another individual. Everyone has their own set of characteristics and problems or things we all need to work on. There might be a teacher having trouble connecting with a student. There might be a mother who feels overwhelmed with the demands of children, groceries, soccer practices, family dinner, etc. There might be a married couple who is struggling with effective communication or trying to cope with an alarming behavior of a child. We all have different areas in our lives we see potential for change or growth in self improvement. It might be learning to work more efficiently. It might be learning more self discipline. It might be working on time management. Whether its learning humility, charity, public speaking, learning to trust again we all can change and can become better. I came across from the Autobiography Of Ben Franklin an awesome list of 13 areas he wanted to work on. His list includes...

1. TEMPERANCE. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
2. SILENCE. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
3. ORDER. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.
4. RESOLUTION. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.
5. FRUGALITY. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing.
6. INDUSTRY. Lose no time; be always employ'd in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.
7. SINCERITY. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speakaccordingly.
8. JUSTICE. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
9. MODERATION. Avoid extreams; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
10. CLEANLINESS. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths, or habitation.
11. TRANQUILLITY. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.
12. CHASTITY. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dulness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.
13. HUMILITY. Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

...what an absolutely amazing list and example of an incredible individual! I know this could be a personal subject but am curious at what you might be working on. If you would rather not share since it is personal I totally understand. As for me I'm currently working on patience, circle of influence (focusing on things I can control) and becoming better at communication. Although my list that I could work on is immense. I think its a great topic. Would love to hear any feedback, comments, experiences, etc.

Man Vs Machine??

Came across a way cool youtube kind of video posted on happyflier.com in a two mile race between a bugatti sports car and a typhoon fighter jet. The bugatti goes from 0-190mph in 18 seconds. Each will go a mile then turn around and come back. The typhoon's engines have over 20,000 pounds of thrust. Go check it out! Have to definately give them props for posting some cool stuff. You will have to scroll down a little ways but its well worth it.

Constructive Criticism

Just pondering some thoughts on criticism. It is often a tough subject to handle. I like to see it personally as a stepping stone for self improvement. We've all heard the famous quote "That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger". I think we need to recognize the truth potential when given even if it is a warning sign. Our maturity is definately found in how we handle or approach the criticism. If possible we should look at it directly square in the eye. Look at who the critic is. Seperate ourselves from it momentarily. Look at their sincerity. Or was it actually meant only to be damaging? Once identified embrace it especially if it was from the heart. What can I learn from this? How can I use this to change and become better? Evaluate our growth quickly. Accept it. Learn from it. Don't punish ourselves by dwelling on it. We wouldn't want to swim in a stagnant pool so why review it over and over. Embrace where there is the sincere potential of growth and move on. It's been said no leader is exempt from criticism and one's humility will nowhere be seen more clearly than in the manner in which one accepts and reacts positively to it. Any thoughts? Would love to hear...

High Five

This blog wouldn't be complete without including my favorite number. Five is the first safe prime number. There are five natural senses: Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste and Touch. There are also five elements: Fire, Air, Water, Earth and Spirit. The Torah has five books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). There are five major oceans in the world. Most roses have 5 petals. The UN Security Council has 5 permanent members with veto power. There are five vowels (AEIOU). There are five Great Lakes. We have five workdays typically (M-F). Often individuals favorite time of the time is five o'clock. In basketball we have the starting five. There are five facial openings. We have five fingers and five toes. There are even five counties along the Wasatch Front! How can someone NOT like the number five? What's your favorite number? Would love to hear!
